Fibroids

If you're struggling with fibroids, our team can provide you with a diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy. Schedule in Atlanta, GA.

The connection between your lower back pain and your prolonged period may, in fact, be fibroids. These growths are little tumors that are a combination of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue. While the word “tumor” may cause a lot of alarm, these specific growths are actually common in women, and getting fibroid cancer is quite rare. Despite this, they can cause a lot of discomfort if left untreated. At Radiant Women’s Health, Dr. Birt can offer effective excision of these tumors to help you feel comfortable again. Schedule your appointment at our Conyers, GA center to learn more today.

What Causes Fibroids?

The exact cause of fibroids is currently unknown. However, research suggests that genetic and hormonal factors play a key role in the growth of these uterine tumors. Estrogen and progesterone are the hormones that the ovaries produce which cause the uterine lining to regenerate during periods. When secreted in excess, such as during pregnancy, these hormones can cause the growth of fibroids on the uterus. Women over the age of 30 and those with high body weight are at greater risk of developing these growths.

What Are the Symptoms?

Some of the most common symptoms caused by these growths include pelvic pain, increased urination, abnormal periods, and heavy bleeding. If these all sound familiar to you, we urge you to schedule a consultation at our center. Getting an accurate diagnosis for this issue without proper imaging and testing can be difficult. Therefore, seeking the help of a professional gynecologist like Dr. Birt is essential to getting you the help you need.

Office Hysteroscopy for Fibroids

At Radiant Women’s Health, we offer office hysteroscopy treatments in response to this issue. This procedure involves the use of a tool we call a hysteroscope. We insert this thin, lighted tube into the vagina to examine the cervix and inside of the uterus. The main benefit of this procedure is that it doubles as both a diagnostic and treatment tool. If a fibroid is found on your uterus, it can be removed during your appointment via an operative hysteroscopy. This procedure is considered minor surgery and usually doesn’t require a hospital stay, but a few hours of rest at our office may be necessary to monitor your condition.
